Myth 1: Blue Light is Harmful to Your Eyes

Reality: There’s a lot of nuance and debate here. Blue light, part of the visible light spectrum, does indeed have potential effects on the eyes. It can lead to digital eye strain, particularly from prolonged screen use, which includes symptoms like dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. However, the notion that these kinds of blue lights directly causes long-term damage like cataracts or macular degeneration in the general population is unclear and unproven. While laboratory studies suggest high-intensity blue light might be harmful to retinal cells, the everyday exposure from screens is significantly lower and The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that there’s no conclusive evidence showing blue light from digital devices leads to permanent eye damage.

Myth 2: Blue Light Glasses Are Important for Everyone

Reality: Blue light blocking glasses have surged in popularity, but their necessity is debated. These glasses might help reduce eye strain and improve sleep quality by filtering out blue light, particularly in environments with lots of artificial light. However, for most people, the benefits might be marginal unless they suffer from specific symptoms or have a sleep disorder linked to light exposure. Some studies show these glasses can help with comfort during screen time, but others find little to no difference in reducing discomfort.

Myth 3: All Blue Light is Bad

Reality: While it isn’t inherently bad and is crucial for certain health factors. It can boost alertness, help memory and cognitive function, and regulate circadian rhythms. Natural blue light from the sun is essential for these benefits. The potential issue may arise with artificial blue light sources like LEDs and screens, especially at night, which can disrupt sleep patterns by suppressing melatonin production.

Myth 4: Reducing Blue Light Exposure is Simple

Reality: While reducing blue light exposure sounds straightforward, it may be more challenging in practice. Practical steps include:
Using Night Mode or Filters on Devices: Many devices now offer settings to reduce emission at night.
Limiting Screen Time Before Bed: This can help maintain your sleep cycle.
Using Proper Lighting: Opt for warmer light bulbs in the evening to minimize exposure.
Outdoor Time: Natural light during the day can help balance out the effects of artificial light at night.

Myth 5: Children Are More at Risk from Blue Light

Reality: Children’s eyes do transmit more blue light to the retina due to clearer lenses, but there’s no definitive evidence that this leads to long-term harm from screens. However, good screen habits are still recommended for children to prevent eye strain and promote healthy sleep patterns.

The Bottom Line:
Blue light from digital devices can contribute to eye strain but isn’t conclusively linked to permanent eye damage in typical exposure scenarios. While blue light glasses might offer comfort, they may not produce the desired effect in all patients.

We are very proud to welcome our newest optometrist and team member, Dr. Rachael Campbell, who will be joining Toronto Eye Care effective October 7, 2024. Please join us in extending Dr. Campbell a warm welcome and a successful journey in our Manulife Centre practice.

Dr. Rachael Campbell was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario and is excited to be practicing optometry in her hometown. Dr. Campbell graduated from McMaster University in 2019 with an Honours Bachelor of Life Science. She then pursued her Doctorate of Optometry at the New England College of Optometry (NECO) in Boston, Massachusetts. Additionally, Dr. Campbell has completed externships in Veteran’s Affairs, Community Health, and at the NECO Centre for Eye Care with clinical training in Myopia Control, Specialty Contact Lenses, Low Vision and Binocular Vision.

In order to further her clinical knowledge and expertise, Dr. Campbell completed a residency program in Primary Care optometry with concentrations in Ocular Disease management and Community Health at the DotHouse Community Health Centre in Dorchester, Massachusetts. During this residency, she gained significant firsthand experience diagnosing and treating ocular diseases including infections, Uveitis, Glaucoma and Dry Eye. She also facilitated the implementation of a telemedicine screening program for Diabetic Retinopathy to help improve access to eye care for underprivileged patients in the Dorchester community. Dr. Campbell also supervised optometry students during pediatric vision screenings in local schools, and presented an academic poster at the American Academy of Optometry’s annual meeting on distinguishing Age-Related Macular Degeneration from Pachychoroid Spectrum Disorders.

Dr. Campbell is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the American Optometric Association. She prides herself on providing comprehensive and compassionate optometric care to all of her patients.

Dr. Campbell is excited to be practicing optometry back home in Toronto and to be able to give back to the community in which she was raised. In her free time she enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with family and friends.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon is positioned between Earth and the sun and casts a shadow over Earth.

Tips for Safe Viewing of the Solar Eclipse:
• The only safe way to look directly at the sun is through specifically
designed solar filters. These filters are used in both “eclipse glasses”
or in solar eclipse viewers you hold up to your eyes.
• Even if they are very dark, your regular sunglasses are not safe for
viewing the solar eclipse.
• While it might be tempting to pick up a cheap pair of solar-eclipse
glasses from unauthorized vendors online, this puts you at significant
risk of buying unsafe or counterfeit glasses that won’t provide your
eyes with adequate protection.
• You shouldn’t be able to see anything through an authentic solar
filter except the sun or equally bright light, such as the reflection
of sunlight off a mirror.
• If you can see ordinary lights through your eclipse glasses or
handheld viewer, they aren’t safe and you are at a higher risk
of damaging your eyes.
• Check your solar filter or eclipse glasses for any damage before
using them. Any damage impacts the device’s ability to protect
you, so don’t use them if you see any scratches or dents.
• Never look at the sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope or
binoculars, even with eclipse glasses. By design, these lens-based
devices intensify light rays, damaging the protective properties
of eclipse glasses and your eyes.
• Damage to your eyes from unsafely staring at an eclipse may not
happen until 4 to 12 hours after staring at the eclipse.
Your eyes and vision are precious and regardless of what is
happening in the sky, it is up to you to protect them.

When is the eclipse happening?
In Ontario, the solar eclipse is expected to start at 2:04 p.m. and last for about two and a half hours on Monday, April 8. Many parts of Ontario will experience a total eclipse (the sun is 100% blocked by the moon) at about 3:20 pm.
These times will vary by a few minutes depending where in Ontario you are located.

What is Solar Retinopathy?
The retina is the part of the eye that sends light signals to the brain so you can see. Without a healthy retina, you can’t see clearly. Staring at the eclipse can cause a condition called solar retinopathy, which is when solar radiation damages the eyes. It can even lead to permanent blind spots or distortions in your vision. This damage occurs when people underestimate the sun, thinking that an eclipse blocks enough of its light for it to be safe to look at.

What are the symptoms of eye damage caused from looking at an eclipse?
• Blurry vision
• A blind spot in your central vision in one or both eyes
• Distortion in which a straight line looks bent or a door frame looks curvy
• Changes in the way you see colour, known as “dyschromatopsia”
• Increased sensitivity to light
• Eye pain or grittiness

Research has shown that early onset of nearsightedness can have both short- and long-term impacts. In the short term, it can impact a child academically. In the long term, it can potentially lead to risks to eye health.

  • This study will evaluate a daily disposable contact lens designed to slow myopia progression. 
  • The total time commitment for study participants is approximately 18 hours, consisting of nine visits over the course of three years.
  • Patients will be compensated for their time with free daily disposable contact lenses for use during the study, free eye exams, plus up to $200 towards the cost of a pair of spectacles.
  • Please note these eligibility requirements to see if your child may be eligible to participate in the study.
